Artist Statement/Inspiration:

"This piece, entitled “Tricolour Bumblebee and Sunflowers” was inspired by a recent visit to British Columbia. My wife and I had the opportunity to stay at Similkameen Artist Residency for 3 months, an amazing log cabin retreat located in Keremeos. As the months began to warm up, wildflowers began to erupt everywhere - my favourite being Balsam Arrowroot, known locally as the Okanagan sunflower. The arrival of spring wildflowers also brought with it a multitude of pollinator species. I found tremendous joy watching the silhouettes of the bees through the flower petals as the morning sun rose. I decided to swap the Okanagan sunflower with a “traditional” sunflower - a favourite of mine from Ontario.

The unique vantage point (from beneath the sunflowers) was inspired by a Pollinator Conservation course I took in my undergraduate degree. There I learned about the unique ability some bees have to determine the viability of a flower based on the UV pattern they see as light passes through the flower petals. All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed working with the vibrant colours in this piece, and it was a joy to create!"

About Chris:

Christopher Macleod is a self-taught Canadian artist, living in Guelph, Ontario with his wife. Though having little formal education in visual arts apart from art history, he has begun a successful freelance business with clients across the globe. He focuses primarily on realism; each watercolour or chalk pastel piece aims to capture the beauty and intricacies of nature, thereby increasing the public’s appreciation for Canadian wildlife. This allows him to synthesize his artistic talents with his love for wildlife conservation - a marriage of two passions developed over the course of his life.
